These hot pink, worldly snails have lived in Rome and Paris before coming to Miami in these past few months. They came to coincide with Art Basel Miami 2010, they stayed to liven-up the atmosphere and with an environmental message- they are made out of recycled plastic and wish to make people stop and think about the environment. They are courtesy of the Italian art collective Cracking Art Group and gallerist Gloria Porcella, co-owner of Galleria Ca’ d’Oroand.

To explain more about the message the snails bring, Porcella has been quoted saying, “We run and we work too much, and the snail is one of the slowest animals on earth…The concept is the snail wants us to think about ourselves and they want to teach us something. We run, run, run but what are we reaching? What are our goals? We are destroying our planet.”

Although Darcy is a fan, not everyone in the neighborhood was. Since the snails have been victims of vandalism (one even being thrown into the bay) they are slithering away to Coral Gables, FL where they hope to have a warmer welcome.

Today I stepped in a slushy, brown puddle of melted snow crossing 57th street that went up to my mid-calf! This weather has made me a hermit lately but I’ll be wading through the slush to walk to a new exhibit this weekend. Straddling Chelsea and the West Village on busy 14th Street is a recent addition to the area’s gallery scene- P.J.S Exhibitions. Their current exhibit, Homesick, is artist Michael Porten’s first solo NYC Show (the show runs from Jan. 7th- March 11th). I missed the opening night reception but the gallery was nice enough to send me the video.

A little background about the gallery- Patrick Sullivan opened P.J.S. Exhibitions and he will host a series of exhibits with a diverse selection of emerging artists’ work, such as work from photographers, tattoo artists and jewelry designers.

Work below by Michael Porten:
