Art Word of the Day: Nouveau Réalisme
March 24, 2011 Art Word of the Day
Nouveau Réalisme (or New Realism in English) was coined in 1960 by Pierre Restany, a French critic. Meant to characterize a group of artists who include real objects (often junk) in their work with the intention of making ironic comments on modern life. Yves Klein and Tinguely were among the leading artists of NR (Clarke 2010).
I’m trying something new- I’m going to start posting an “Art Word of the Day”. I recently got inspired by a new dictionary I just bought at the MoMA bookstore that is focused on a broad range of art terms called “Oxford The Concise Dictionary of Art Terms“. I know most people might find it boring to read a dictionary A-Z, so I want to pick a new word from the book that I find interesting and have Darcy present it to you!
