Sabanci Museum & Turkish Coffee in Istanbul

I’m really fortunate to have a mother-in-law that knows me so well and even better, shares my same interests. When visiting my family in Istanbul early this year, she knew exactly where to take me – the small museum and former summer home of a Turkish entrepreneurial family, the Sakip Sabanci Museum. It is now my favorite museum in Istanbul because of its historical relevance to the community and beautiful revolving exhibitions.

This stately, white mansion sits above the Bosphorus River with a scenic view of the bridge. The now private fine arts museum houses an impressive collection of Ottoman calligraphy and religious art with temporary exhibitions, most notably a Picasso and a Rodin exhibit; then while I was visiting, a Monet exhibit.

Next door to the museum is my favorite Turkish dessert shop in Istanbul, Sutis. I can never decide which sugar soaked deliciousness I should have with my Ottoman style Turkish coffee.  I tend to like the traditional desserts – anything with rose water or helva but my husband likes the Tavuk gogsu, a milky, thick pudding with pulled chicken breast. It is the weirdest thing I have ever eaten- no exaggeration here and I’ve eaten a lot of divergent foods while traveling. The idea of a poultry flavor in my milk dessert just isn’t palatable to me but I can appreciate the distinctive quality.

Traveling to Turkey from the USA is a long flight at 10+ hours. This August  I’m looking forward to traveling around the countryside and the west coast, so it will be important for me to take some good books and electronic games for the quiet time.

I am completely addicted to Geoguessr, thanks to my co-workers. It’s free but you’ll need to be on WiFi to play this one because it utilizes Google Earth and Google Maps by dropping you in a undisclosed location and leaving you to guess where in the world you are based on clues you can obtain from “driving” around the area. The closer you can pinpoint where you are, the more points you score. This game has eaten many hours of my day and since I brought home my addiction, my husband and I argue nightly about which part of Russian we are in.

A popular game for those ready to drop some gambling money is Pocket Fruity Mobile Casino. It’s the UK popular mobile casino that gets great reviews from users. There are sign-up bonuses and many games to choice from.
