Don’t be Scared of the Street Art in Istanbul
January 17, 2013 A*RT!? Happens
On a quest to worry my husband and in-laws to death, I insisted on exploring Istanbul on my own, including venturing through the public transportation system. Because I was staying with my new family there for 21 days, this air sign needed a little breathing room. I explained how I am from New York, traveled to many more difficult places and so this can’t be that dangerous, but like any caring family, they were nervous for me to be by myself in a new place. So, I committed to staying in the tourist and English-speaking areas.
Before a visit to the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, I wandered the narrow streets of the Eminönü and Sultanahmet area. There I discovered some odd street art and dilapidated buildings that gave this area an unique and curious character.
A grey, stray cat lead me to this public art space, housed in an abandoned building. Inside a sign spray painted on the wall read, “Art Gallery- Don’t be scared- You will like it”. I challenged that sign because I’m not scared of much! And this is what I found.
