My Favorite Art Deco Building in Miami

This might be the first time I’ve been excited to see a post office but this was definitely the most interesting post office I’ve ever seen. My favorite building on Darcy’s walking tour of Art Deco South Beach was the Miami Beach Post Office.

Walking down Washington St. we spotted this rare example of Streamlined Federal Art Deco style architecture. Built in 1937, it was saved from the wrecking ball in the mid-century.

Walking in the main entrance I entered a detailed and shiny rotunda. A famous mural by Charles Hardman depicting Ponce de Leon’s invasion of Florida does a semi circle opposite the entrance.

The rotunda ceiling light is designed as an art deco sun complete with reddish light beams.

Some of the shiny, brass post office boxes are original and still in use.

My husband is a huge fan of Art Deco, I'm going to show him this when he gets home. Thank you.

I went through the same experience at the Zagreb post office. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. Lovely photos, particularly like the light fixtures and the boxes.
